Conditionals - if Clauses - Zero Type
Type 0 (zero) - Zero Conditional The conditional type zero is used when we want to talk about general truths, scientific facts or things which always happen under same conditions.
Important: We use this conditional when the result will always happen.
How to form Zero Conditional sentence:
Rule and Form:
In 'zero' conditional sentences, the tenses in both parts of the sentence are the Simple Present:
IF CLAUSE (CONDITION)MAIN CLAUSE (RESULT)
If + Simple Present Tense Simple Present Tense
If you mix yellow and blue,
If it gets hot,
If you touch a fire,
it becomes green.
ice melts.
you get burned.
When we use if clause at the the beginning of the sentence we use a comma(,) :
*.If you heat ice,it melts.
but when we use if clause at the end of the sentence we don't use a comma:
*.It melts if you heat ice.
Example Sentences:
*.If I miss the bus, I get late for work.
*.
Milk spoils if you leave it in the sun.
*.
Water turns to ice if you put it in the freezer.
*.If I get late for work, my boss gets angry.
*.If people don't eat, they get hungry.
*.If you heat ice, does it melt?
*.People die if they don't eat.

Type 1 - First ConditionalWe use the "First Conditional" to talk about present or future events that are likely to happen. This conditional is usually based on real events, and they are used to make statements about the real world, and about particular situations. Our aim in type 1 is often to give warnings:

In 'first' conditional sentences, the tenses in both parts of the sentence are present or future:

Main Clause (result part)
We can usewill, can, may, might, could, must, have to should and imperative formsin the main clause of a first conditional.
Will
We usually use "will" with first conditional sentences:
*.If he's late again, I'llbe very angry.
*.If he is accepted, hewillbe studying in Atlanta next year.
*.If they begin now, theywillhave finished their term paper next month.
Can / May (permisssion)
*. Shecan/mayleave early if she's finished her work?
May, might, could (possibility)
*.If the president doesn't come to the meeting, wemay/ could/ mightcancel it.
*.Imightcome and visit you in America next year if I save enough money.
must, have to (obligation)
*.Youmust / have tostudy hard if you want to pass the exam.
*.If you are late, youmusttake a taxi.
Should, had better, ought to (advice)
*.If you're annoyed with him, youshould / ought to / had bettertell him.
*.Youshouldchange subway at next station if you're going to the city center.
Imperative Mood
*.If the TV doesn't work,pushthis botton.
*.If you haven't decided on a vacation yet,goto Antalya.
*.Pleaseexchangethese shoes if you are going to the mall.
If Clause (condition part)We can useSimple present ,Perfect (have+Verb3), Present Continuous Tense, Can Should to be (am, is, are)in the if clause part of a first conditional.
Simple present TenseWe usually use "Simple Present Tense" with first conditional sentences:
*.If hedoesn't hurry, he will be late.
*.If wegoby train, it will be cheaper.
*.Who will you invite if yougivea party?
Present Perfect (have+Verb3)
*. If youhaven't decidedon a vacation yet, go to Antalya.
*.She can leave early if she's finishedher work?
Can
*.If Icansave enough money, I might come and visit you in America next year.
*.If youcanspeak English, you will find jobs easily.
Should
We use should to show that there is little possibility.
*.If anyoneshouldask for me, I'll be in the manager's office.
*.If youshouldever need anything, please don't hesitate to call me.
Present Continuous Tense
*.If youare seeingthe doctor at 10:00, you'll need to leave now.
*.If sheis studyingin her room now, I will be very happy.
*.If the systemis workingwith any problem, you may leave.
Use of a comma
When we use if clause at the the beginning of the sentence weuse a comma(,) :
*.If you study hard,you will pass the exam.
but when we use if clause at the end of the sentence wedon't use a comma:
*.You will pass the examif you study hard.
